The Spokane Public Market has publicly announced that the market will close it's doors at the end of the day, next Friday, March 7th.
The Market's non-profit management makes mention of the difficult economic conditions in the last few years as the main reason behind the closure. The Market opened a little more then two years ago in Downtown Spokane and was leasing the space from the building owner. The Market was to be part of a project called Pacific Bridge, however after the closure only a small portion of the space will continue to be occupied.
Pinot's Palette , a franchised spirits / art class business and Tinbender Craft Distillery will be the only tenants of the building after the market's departure next week. The building is in the Sodo district of Downtown at 24 W. 2nd Ave , in between Division and Browne .
Another business, Sun People Dry Goods , a green and sustainable products retailer closed earlier this year. However, The Inlander has reported that Sun People is re-opening soon and moving over to the building at 19 W. Main which is now undergoing major renovations for Sun People and a few other new tenants in that portion of Downtown. We hope to have more info on that soon.
The Spokane Public Market is home to about 20 different vendors ranging from farmer's market like vendors to a deli and even a small pub called Marketplace Cork & Keg. The Market also has a small European Market selling many items from Europe, primarily Eastern Europe. The vendors of the Market will offer some discounts for the final week to sell off remaining merchandise. There is no word as of now for what will happen to the vendors currently doing business in the Market. Some, may move over to 19 W. Main but that is only a guess.
There are currently no plans on what make take over the relatively large space. The closure is not expected to cause much job loss as most vendors are very small businesses.
